Better yet, these aligners are comfortable, removable, and as their name implies, nearly invisible! However, there are certain things that can lead to them turning stained and yellow—meaning if you’re an Invisalign patient, you’ll want to be sure you’re keeping your aligners crystal clear so that your beautiful teeth underneath are visible. Here’s what you need to keep in mind.
Why Do Clear Aligners Turn Yellow?
There are many everyday habits that can cause Invisalign trays to become cloudy, dull, and yellow. Drinking coffee, tea, or dark sodas while wearing your aligners is one of the biggest culprits, as these beverages can seep into the plastic and cause staining. Smoking or using tobacco products while wearing your trays can also have a similar effect. Not to mention, not cleaning your aligners often enough allows plaque, bacteria, and food particles to build up on the surface, which can also lead to a cloudy or yellow appearance over time as well.
What Can I Do to Prevent Stained Aligners?
Luckily, there are several preventive measures you can keep in mind that will help to keep your Invisalign trays as clear as the day you first started wearing them:
- Rinse your aligners with cool water every time you take them out, since hot water can warp the plastic material they’re made of.
- Brush them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, mild soap before putting them back in. Never use regular toothpaste, mouthwash, or bleach, which can be abrasive or cause staining.
- When your aligners need a deeper clean, use your Invisalign cleaning crystals as instructed.
- Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything besides water, especially coffee, tea, red wine, and soda.
- Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco while wearing your aligners (or altogether during treatment, since the habit can just as easily stain your teeth).
If your aligners have already started to discolor despite your best efforts, don’t panic! If you’re keeping up with your treatment progress, you’ll be swapping to a new set soon—and from there, you can work towards keeping them looking their best.
