Don’t let that discourage you though. There are several ways you can ease new aligner discomfort, making the teeth-straightening journey considerably smoother. Read on for a few examples!

1. Use a Cold Compress

Just like icing a sprained ankle can help alleviate discomfort and swelling, placing a cold compress against the outside of your cheek can reduce soreness and inflammation stemming from the movement of your teeth. It’s best to do so for about 10 minutes at a time, and, if you don’t have a cold compress, you can use a towel-wrapped ice pack instead. Before you know it, the pressure and irritation will be gone.

2. Stick to Soft Foods

Simply put, eating crunchy foods, like tortilla chips, popcorn, and apples, can exacerbate your discomfort. That’s why patients are encouraged to opt for smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, and other softer foods immediately following the transition to a new set of aligners. It’s a small switch that can make a big difference when it comes to managing (and preventing!) discomfort.

3. Take OTC Pain Medication as Directed

If you’ve tried the above tips, but your discomfort persists, try taking OTC pain medication. Just make sure to follow the directions on the label since taking more than the recommended amount can lead to several serious consequences. It’s also a good idea to ask your orthodontist if they have any suggestions, like avoiding anti-inflammatory ones.

4. Keep Orthodontic Wax Close By

One of the many perks of Invisalign is that the aligners are custom-made to fit the contours of your mouth perfectly, making them considerably more comfortable. If one of your trays does have a sharp edge, then use orthodontic wax to protect the soft tissue in your mouth. You can also bring your aligner to your orthodontist so they can carefully smooth out the edge with a file.

Bonus Tip: Switch Your Aligners Before Bed

The reason soreness, pressure, and discomfort arise in the time following the transition to a new set of aligners is because that’s when your teeth are moving the most. That’s why we recommend making the switch right before you go to bed instead of first thing in the morning. Then, you can sleep through the initial adjustment period!

About the Practice

Our team at University Dental Group is proud to offer several smile-enhancing treatments, including Invisalign.
